I am writing this with a heavy heart, as we are planning to take my mom's almost-16-year-old Pekingese, Mollie, to be put down tomorrow.
Mom got Mollie as a therapy dog for my dad, about 13 years ago, after dad was left an invalid after a traumatic car accident. Mom even took dad, in his wheelchair, to PAWS, our local animal shelter, to help pick out this little lap dog. Though Dad never really took to Mollie (or anyone else after his accident--which caused brain trauma), he did tell Mom that Mollie was his favorite dog and that he loved her. And then, as dogs sometimes do, Mollie became Mom's dog. She was there with Mom in Daytona Beach, when Mom would visit Dad in a Veteran's nursing home there. She was there with Mom when Dad passed away several years ago. And Mollie has been Mom's best friend ever since.
They can't live forever...we don't expect them to. But that's not to say that it isn't hard to say goodbye to an old, loyal friend.
We love you Mollie. Thanks for bringing so much happiness to Mom and our entire family. We'll see you again one day.
